In 2014, to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Sailor Moon, Toei Animation launched Sailor Moon Crystal. This was not a sequel or a remake of the 1992 anime. It was billed as a faithful adaptation of Naoko Takeuchi’s manga. And the transformations reflect that mission in a very specific way.
Crystal made a bold technical choice: the transformation sequences were created using 3D CGI character models, placed over 2D hand-drawn backgrounds. The result was a smooth, shiny, almost doll-like appearance. Many fans complained that it looked “too plastic.” But if you compare it to the manga, you start to see the logic. The manga transformations have almost no in-between steps. There is light, a silhouette, and then the finished form. This jump-cut logic works better with a stylized, slightly unreal character model than with traditional hand-drawn animation. The CGI gives the body a sculptural, ideal quality—more like a fashion illustration, just like Takeuchi’s original art.
The camera work in Crystal transformations is also completely different from 1992. It spins around the character in full 360 degrees. It zooms from close-ups of fingertips all the way out to wide shots. This dynamic movement gives the transformation a sense of space and grandeur that the older animation never attempted.
The color palette is cooler, too. Crystal favors pearl white, crystal blue, and moonlight silver over the candy-colored pinks and yellows of the 1992 version. The emotional tone shifts from “Look how pretty!” to something more solemn, almost sacred.
The music and voice acting also reflect this change. Kotono Mitsuishi returned as Usagi, but her delivery is softer and more mature. The composer Yasuharu Takanashi replaced Takanori Arisawa, and his music uses long string notes and ethereal choirs rather than playful harp melodies.
Crystal doesn’t try to replace the 1992 anime in anyone’s heart. It offers something different: a more faithful, more digital, more serious version of the same story. Its transformations are not candies. They are crystals.
